To Burn More Calories, Make More Muscle:
Lifting weight helps shed pounds as a side effect of building and carrying more muscle. Muscle is a much more metabolically active tissue than fat and therefore speeds up our metabolism(the rate at which calories are burned)
Weight training can help increase insulin sensitivity which helps with the body's uptake and utilisation of carbohydrates. As well as this, effective weight training increases levels of human growth hormone which helps build muscle and burn fat.
The Principle of Variety:
Weight training allows for an endless combination of exercises, reps, sets, tempos and rest intervals which will help avoid hitting plateaus and will keep you progressing towards your target.
